2008 -- Roy Walters of the Morgantown News Herald writes about Palmer, “I was not surprised to read long ago that Palmer was the second highest paid golfer in the world last year with over $26 million in earnings. No other athlete has ever approached such a lofty spot in his sport at age 78.”

Palmer prepares for '69 Open qualifier

1969 -- Palmer plays a practice round at the Youghiogheny Country Club in advance of the U.S. Open sectional qualifiers to be held there in early June. Palmer shoots 67 over a zippy round played in three hours and 15 minutes by his foursome. Palmer tells reporters, “Slow play is getting to be a real problem in golf -- but not with me.”

Palmer urges '71 high school grads to respect America

1971 -- During an address to his youthful neighbors at Greater Latrobe High School, Palmer urges graduates to be thoughtful in their protests, if protest they must: “I’ve been all over this world and I can tell you that this country is so fantastic it couldn’t be any better. You can be as successful as you want to be. About 35 years ago, I was a dirty faced kid playing in the stream about a half mile from here. My dad was superintendent of the club earning a nominal wage. But there was no stopping me. Not in this country.”

1993 -- Fred Couples tells about the time he was golfing with Ray Floyd at a Sherwood Country Club event and he needed to make an 18th hole 20-footer so both he and Ray Floyd would be matched against Palmer and Peter Jacobsen the next day. “I look over and Ray’s studying the scoreboard. So he knows if I make it we’re playing with Palmer and Jacobsen. I make it and we both kind of said at the same time, ‘Great! Now, we’re paired with Palmer!’ Ray’s 50 years old and he’s excited because he gets to play with Palmer. I was real excited the year (1992) I won Bay Hill because it was big deal. I got to meet him, get a trophy with his name on it and do all that stuff.”
