 | 1954 -- Palmer accepts Wake Forest College athletic director James H. Weaver’s offer to come back and coach his Demon Deacons. Years later, Coach Palmer reflects on his brief tenure and says, “It was great. We had some problems, sure, but under the circumstances they were to be expected. We had a fine group of boys and it was a successful season. As I recall, I didn’t try to change things. The only thing I asked of the players was that they practice long and hard, observe the rules and play to win.” |  | FEB
 | 1956 -- With an eye toward easing ease the difficulties of traveling around the country as a young touring professional, Arnold Palmer begins discussing taking flying lessons in 1956 at nearby Latrobe Airport with local pilot Babe Krinock. |  | FEB
 | 1957 -- Palmer finishes tied for 20th at the Tucson Open Invitational
and leaves what was then a small desert town with a $175 paycheck in
his pocket. In October 2005, Palmer returns to Tucson to launch the
city’s First Tee program and is asked if he’s chagrined that some of
today’s professionals can earn more than a $1 million for a single
victory. Palmer’s reply? “No. One of my goals was to help make what

 | 1957 -- Palmer's third place finish at Brackenridge Park Municipal Course, site of the Texas Open Invitational, earns him $1,300. | FEB

Open Invitational at Memorial Park Municipal Course. To date, the
$7,500 first place check is his largest.
